Stinking Fish Studio Tour

Come and stay at the Lodge while you explore one of the richest "art trails" on the island - meet the artists, see their work and take some home with you!

The Stinking Fish Studio Tour takes place twice a year, an event, which may well be the highlight of your stay at the Lodge! At these events, the many artists and artisans who make Metchosin and East Sooke their home, display their art in beautiful surroundings, which provides much of their inspiration. Admission is free. All are welcome. Artworks are for sale. For more information go to www.stinkingfishstudiotour.com.

Rick learned to carve from his grandfather James Forest, at the age of 6 years. He has carved with and learned much from many other westcoast carvers. Since 1980, he has been teaching native carving in Calgary with the Board of Education Continuing Education, Parks and Recreation; Montana State Univ. in Bozeman MT; and John C Campbell Folk School, Brasstown NC. Rick holds weekly classes in his Calgary shop and does weekend courses through Lee Valley Tools. He carves poles, masks, bent cedar boxes, paddles, decorative doors, plaques, and other regalia for himself and on commission. His commissioned pieces are currently in Europe, Mexico, USA and Canada.

Cree Drum Making Workshop by Louise Crane

The most important Native American instrument is the drum. Different tribes have different traditions about the drum and how to play it. The construction used here is traditional: a wooden frame with finely tanned buckskin or elkskin stretched taut across the opening by sinew thongs. Our smaller Native American hand drum can be used for musical or decorative purposes.

At the end of the day the participant will have an 18" hand drum of either deer or elk hide made in the Blackfoot "Crowfoot" method. There will be sharing of traditions and exploration of creative skills. For more information please go to Louise's website at www.lcrane.ca.

Dates:  Spring 2008
Duration: 7 1/2 hours
Cost: $175.00 per person
$125.00 per person for groups 6 or more
